books & reading

Stephen King says you must be reading fiction to be writing fiction. Other fiction writers say they can't read when they're actively writing. I come from the Stephen King school, reading novels and short stories constantly. Although it's fun to read about places you know really well, my favorite books take place in exotic (or at least different) places I've never lived or traveled to.
Here are some of my favorites.

Some new African writers not to miss

Picture
There has been a burgeoning of fiction coming out of African nations in recent years. I try to avoid the overused word "awesome," so let's just say these writers rock!
Some writers I have enjoyed include:
  • Chimananda Ngozi Adichie (Nigeria): Half of a Yellow Sun; Purple Hibiscus, Americanah
  • NoViolet Bulawayo Zimbabwe) , We Need New Names
  • Yaa Gyasi (Ghanaian-American), Homegoing
  • Imbolo Mbue (Cameroon), Behold the Dreamers (an Oprah pick)
  • Dinaw Mengestu (Ethiopian-American), All Our names
